Problem

Women with PCOS have a hard time incorporating major lifestyle changes to manage their symptoms.
PCOS is a hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age, marked by symptoms like excess body hair, weight gain, irregular periods, and ovarian cysts. Although incurable, it can be controlled. It substantially affects quality of life and fertility, impacting roughly 5 to 6 million women in the US and 8-13% of reproductive-aged women worldwide.

Solution

A personalized self-management app for women with PCOS that offers tailored tasks to structure their lifestyle, facilitating gradual changes aimed at managing symptoms.
It will deliver personalized actionable tasks aligned with individual needs and symptoms to aid in symptom reduction and condition improvement.

Question

How might we develop a personalised self-management app for women with PCOS, facilitating lifestyle changes that lead to regular menstrual cycles and mitigate symptoms?
RESEARCH

Understanding our users & identifying their core needs

Survey, Observations & Interviews

We connected with patients and gynaecologists to learn more about the burning needs of the users to identify where a potential design intervention is required.

Secondary Review

To understand the depth of the problem scope we previously identified, we validated our research insights through literature review.

Affinity & Concept Mapping

Techniques that helped us narrow down our problem scope and identify major themes of the problems.

User Personas

We constructed the personas that would help us visualise our different types of users and their specific needs, goals, motivations and pain points.
RESEARCH

Observations

Goal of Observations: Identifying the patients' current lifestyle, eating and exercise habits, and observing reddit threads on critical discussions helping us understand the syndrome better.

Observation Techniques:
Shadowing, Online Ethnography, Diary Studies
We conducted 8 sets of observations of 30-90 minutes each.
RESEARCH

Survey & Interviews

19 out of 50 Survey Responses from Patients
6 Patient Interviews
2 Gynaecologist Interviews
Patient Quotes from Interviews & Survey

“My regular period cycle is messed up, I have to take care of my stress and health simultaneously which is tough. Irregular periods create stress and stress results in more irregularity.”

“It's quite stressful to think about taking tablets regularly and worrying about the potential long-term consequences of PCOS. I don't want it to progress further.”

Key Insights from Research

Management & Monitoring of PCOS Symptoms

Managing PCOS symptoms requires tools for tracking irregular menstrual cycles effectively. These tools should predict and remind users about upcoming periods, aid in managing mood swings and pain, and provide personalized recommendations for symptom relief.

Mental Health Support & Community

Users need access to mental health support resources and a community to connect with others facing similar challenges, addressing anxiety, depression, body image issues, and isolation.

Personalized Diet & Fitness Guidance

Users require personalized guidance for managing diet and fitness related to PCOS symptoms, particularly weight management. This guidance encompasses tailored dietary advice, exercise routines, and motivational support for sustainable lifestyle changes based on individual needs and preferences.

Comprehensive PCOS related information

Users need reliable, credible info on PCOS covering symptoms, causes, treatments, and its impact on physical and mental health. It should be easily understood and personalized.
CONCEPTUALISATION

Brainstorming and Storyboarding

Brainstorming:
To gain a deeper understanding of our problem, we conducted a series of three brainstorming sessions over three days. In the initial session, we generated a list of over 30 diverse ideas that aligned with our three design directives: ‘mental health & community support’, ‘PCOS monitoring’, and ‘diet & fitness’. In the second session, we brainstormed with different people allowing us a fresh take on the ideas generated. During the third session, we each thought about the ideas on our own, relying on our knowledge and insights, which gave us a variety of perspectives.

Storyboarding:
We then finalised three concepts and created 6 storyboards, 2 for each concept, 1 per 'Patient' persona.

PROTOTYPING

Lo-Fidelity Paper Sketches & Mid-Fidelity Wireframes

Process: We began our exploration of solutions by initially crafting paper wireframes, as it provided a quicker and more efficient way to experiment with various concepts. After exploring a range of ideas, we transitioned to creating mid-fidelity wireframes in Figma to facilitate our initial usability testing with users by using the think aloud method. The valuable insights gathered from users during this mid-fidelity stage informed the necessary adjustments for our final screen designs.

Hi-Fidelity Prototype: Introducing OvaCare

OvaCare, a personalized self-management app for PCOS, offers a task list for overall health and a community for support and knowledge sharing. It offers actionable plans for managing PCOS in the midst of busy schedules. It helps users incorporate small changes into their daily routines, leading to significant improvements in their overall well-being and, specifically, menstrual health
Features

Onboarding & Initial User Data Collection

When onboarding, Ovacare is informed by the user about their symptoms, diet, and any prevailing conditions.
Features

Personalised Daily Task Lists

The user can check more details about a task or choose an alternative. The app asks how the user feels after completing tasks.
Features

Creating New Tasks

The user has the option to personalize their physical or mental fitness routines by adding their own tasks. In this case, the user is including a task to play badminton outdoors.
Features

Connect with people going through similar experiences in the Community

Connect with people who've been through similar experiences and learn from their successes and challenges. Cumulative community insights are highlighted in the section that helps the users understand what activities majorly work for most people. New tasks can also be added through the posts’ tags.
Features

Track your progress and cycle

Users can keep track of their cycle length to see if the app is helpful for them. They can also see tasks grouped into fitness, mental health, and diet categories.
TESTING AND NEXT STEPS

Usability Testing & Evaluation

We conducted three rounds of testing during different phases of design, which included think-aloud with the users, heuristic self-evaluation, and getting the app reviewed by a medical professional. A few of the insights as well as next steps are included below.

Include in-app guidance

In-app tutorial that can walk the users through all of the features.

Improved data visualisation

The track section can have improved data visualization, particularly regarding the cycle length.

More interviews with a diverse set of users

Continue conducting user interviews and observations to gain deeper insights into user behavior, preferences, and pain points. Collaborating with medical professionals to evaluate the application's effectiveness from a clinical perspective. This will help in refining the product and its features.

Symptom Alerts

Notify users to see a doctor for severe symptoms.
